Clay activities for parties from Our Creative Outlet.

Needs some activities for your children or adults this summer? Tired of pottery painting? How about making your own clay pieces for birthday party or just relaxing with your friends? Yes, that's what we did to celebrate our daughter's birthday.

Karen from Our Creative Outlet in Delafield, WI offers that opportunity for us. It's all started from a big blob of clay, rolled, stamped and color. Then, let it dry, bake and it will be ready to pick up in the next week or two. You will have all the fun while she's doing all the dirty job (cleaning).

You can be as creative as you can... Sky is the limit. Best of all, it's a piece you can treasure event till the child to go college.

Teacher's gift idea

It's almost the end of the school year. We start thinking what would be an appropriate gift to the teacher? I always value hand made items... or we could always get gift cards from books stores or restaurants in the area. After brainstorming, my daughter decided that she wants to make her gift.
Wow... I'm pretty impressed. I felt I somewhat give her an artistic influence to her.

She decided to make a hand stamped necklace... wow...
As a supporting mom, I showed her how to do it. She chose aluminum disk to work with. After few stamping practice, she felt confident to do the real thing.

Here is the result...
I think it's pretty impressive for an 8 years old to make this.

New Big and Little Dipper earrings...

Big dipper and little dipper are two important constellations to help find the North Star.
The big dipper pointed out where the Polaris is, while the little dipper's "tail" is the Polaris.

With that idea in mind, I designed both big and little dipper earrings.
This earrings is made from two sterling disc, drilled and brushed finish. I drilled the "constellation", borrowing the idea that if you see it through the light, you will see the stars...

It has an asymmetry design as one has Big dipper constellation design while the other has Little dipper. However, the basic shape is still symmetry.

Goblet that makes you feel like a royalty...

I've never thought how wonderful it feels to get a goblet from Ellison Bay Pottery.

You don't have to drink wine from it. No one knows what inside. I use it to drink sparkling juice, milk (with cookie), tea, water, juice... and I feel like a royalty.

It's a beautiful piece to look at and yet it's more functional than regular glass goblet.
Best, it's microwave able. Because it's made of clay, it could withstand heat.

EBP makes not only goblets, mugs and vases. They also make lamps, baskets, casserole bowl, plates and other functional items.

Not an engagement ring...

Looking to get something unique and personalized? How about a hand stamp ring shape pendant adorn with pearl?

I made " Not an engagement ring" for my second cousin's wedding. I want to make something that is special to her, fun and not too serious. I want to make something with their names on it, but not to feel like an engagement ring...

So I came up with this idea... Hand stamped sterling silver with their name on it, adorned with fresh water pearls dangled on adjustable black waxed cotton cord.

It's not an engagement ring, not a wedding band... I call it a commitment necklace.

A Little Hut, a recycling project idea.

Recently, I hear more about going green and recycle items. What would you do with old boxes, news paper, bottle caps? For me, it would go to the recycling bin.

But what would happen if you give a graphic designer old magazines, bottle caps or any unwanted items?

I know Patricia would turn it into a recycling project. One of her newest project is this recycled paper flower.

Her other recycling project can be seen in her Flickr link

Handmade Cards by Amana

I admire illustrators...
Even though I say I can draw (buildings), I believe it's harder to draw expressions.
As I was strolling down Dawanda stores, I stumbled on this card. It's hand made by Amana of Dawada.com
Not only it's nice to see, great color and fun design, best of all, it made me smile...

Wedding anniversary gift idea.

I learned that Eighth wedding anniversary gifts could be pottery, bronze or even linen or lace.

I have an idea what I want for the gift. I want a functional items, made from pottery, with the dates and names on it preferable, stamped not painted. I have been trying to find a clay thrower from Etsy and beyond. Most couldn't make it because they need about 1 month to deliver. I'm towards the edge of frustration and start thinking alternatives.

I suddenly remember a pottery store in downtown Waukesha and spoke to Michael from the Potter's shop . I explained to him what I wanted, the size, the color, the writing and the date when I need it. It turns out that he could make it for me, by the date I needed. Wow... he made my day.

The mug turned out to be what I expected. The part I love, other than it's personalized mug, is the thumb rester. It made holding the mug so very comfortable.

Thank you Michael for your help to make my idea a reality.

Mothers day gift ideas...

Mother's day is just around the corner. As a mom myself, I have some ideas of things I like. If you are still looking for an idea, how about some of these ideas:

1. Make your own card. Nothing is more special than home made card. I always love receiving cards from my daughter.

2. Cook for her. You can bake, cook, grill... If you never done so, you may be surprise how creative with cooking... I'm sure she would love it...

3. A Spa gift basket for her... She would love have a relaxing time for herself.

4. Last but not least, a name pendant with all children's name on it. It's something that she will treasure all her life...

What do you think?

Bird Nest inspired Necklace.

Last Summer, we found a bird nest in our backyard. It was hiding inside a tree, but Marshall, our next door neighbor kid found it. All the kids on the block was so thrilled. Almost 4-5 kids would gather around and look at the nest. Even grown ups... Soon, one by one flew and left the empty nest.

Few month later, as I was thinking for my new design... I decided to make bird nest inspired necklace. It's made of sterling silver disc, adorned with fresh water pearls....

Still in spirit of recycling, I found this creative ideas in recycling mother board or PCB ( Printed Circuit Board ).
Debby Arem has given the old, used PCB's a new life.
She makes jewelry, office products, clocks, magnets, picture frames and much more from PCB's. My favorite,... the sun catcher. The material was the film that used to design the circuit board.
How do you recycle?
